this is your lucky day. i don't think could have picked a better place to ask that question. a good inroductory anime would be like cowboy bebop or escaflonwe. after u get done with that u should watch a few anime movies like ninja scroll, akira, or spirited away. after u get through that stuff u can move on to some of the more in depth and deep thinking anime like neon genesis evangelion. i mean there is just tons more to watch but this is the best play by play i could think of

To get you off in anime I wouldsuggest watching Cowboy Bebop and maybe Outlaw Star or DragonBall or Gundam Wing.
As for anime movies anything by Miyazaki is good for everyone, most of it is good for the whole family.I would check out Spirited Away,Princess Mononoke,Castle in the Sky,or My Neighbor Totoro or anything else he did.
Enjoy your anime!

Yay! I get to be helpful for once. Though I usually stick to comedy/romance as you can see. The ones suggested are also good. Fruits Basket [romance/comedy] Excel Saga [comedy] Love Hina [comedy/romance] X/1999 [action/drama/angst]<--nice graphics Kare Kano [romance/comedy] Maison Ikkoku [romance] Rurouni Kenshin [action/adventure/comedy] Endless Waltz [mecha] Ai Yori Aoshi [romance/comedy] GTO [comedy] Boogiepop Phantom: [mystery/sci-fi???] Noir [girls with guns/yuri?] Kodacha [romance] Inuyasha [action/adventure/fluff] Naruto [action/comedy/ninja] Serial Experiments Lain [psychological/angst] Gundam Seed [mecha] Witch Hunter Robin [angst/gothic] Um...that's all that I can recommend that's not the really unknown anime that I tend to watch. I think I covered all of the bases. Hope it helps. Yeah, I'm a little obsessive.

Good anime is in the eye of the beholder, my friend... However, some animes are really cool... Cowboy Bebop is my fav. Trigun is good, and the Excel Saga is funny.
