many of you have the wrong idea of a stereotype. For example you automatically assume that a statement made by another about a particular race is meant to apply to ALL of the people of that race.
Rarely can a statement apply to all variants contained within the subject of the statement, in this case, all people of that race. It goes without saying that the person making the statement is using a stereotype. He would have to!
A stereotype DOES NOT REFER TO ALL of the people of a race, for this example. It is a stereotype!!!! Meaning that the MAJORITY of thoe people are represented by that statement, and that their are exceptions. But the exceptions are understood because absolute statements are easy to make but rarely true.

lol sorry im not to clear typing this stuff out. I mean that most people automatically see stereotypes as a bad thing (don't get me wrong tehy can be bad when used wrongly). But a stereotype of a certain race for example, is intended to represent the majority of the people, not ALL of them. Many people see stereotypes as saying that the person making the statement is applying it to all the people, when in fact the stereotype doesn't do that but it applies to most people.
Like i said in the rap post that [mainstream] rap is crap. People criticized that by calling it a stereotype. It was, but not how they meant it. I meant it as representing the majority of mainstream rap, which is exaclty what a stereotype is supposed to do. Better?

mostly, stereotypes are bad, though. Like ALL black people listen to rap. Which is wrong, because we all know they listen to techno, hip-hop, and jazz, too. (*rimshot*)
Just kidding, i hate stereotyping people in a negative way. I kinda get what you are saying, how the stereotype means the majority, so in an attempt to clarify the situation, here's what my good pal Webster says: 1. A conventional, formulaic, usually highly simplified opinion, conception or belief.
So I guess Webby backs you up when you say its the majority, because it is like a simplified opinion. It is very general to say that CDs are round, because there are a few, like 1% that are crazy shapes, like weird edges and such. So in other words, a very close synonym of Stereotype is generalization. Eh?

Thus in essence, all you've said is wrong. Funny how that works out

A generalization is just that, a generalization. So its false in that its a staement that has exceptions, but when used as a generalization, it allows for exceptions.
Ex: People eat meat. Not ALL people eat meat, but in general, people eat meat.

that is a REALLY bad example. seriously. what the hell? stop trying to copy off the little writing near my avatar. I read that before, thought it was funny. But i seriously did NOT think about that when i made that example. Yes, i know it wasn't the best (far from it), but its all i could think of.

How about saying that all Germans are Nazis... that doesn't work. You used "all", implying that there are no exceptions. Now if you had said "Germans are nazis" during WWII, that wouldn't work either b/c most germans were actually under nazi oppression, and the majority were not nazis.
