well, im not a tool "fan" or anything, but i think they are cool. I've only heard about five songs by them and they are pretty original and have a nice ring to them. One of these rainy days when I have watched all of my dvds I will wait until the rain clears and walk to a place taht sells cds and check out this Tool you speak of.

They are excellent. Technically they're Metal (that's what they won a Grammy for, Best Metal Performance) but their music ranges from soft, tranquil harmonies to gut-busting head-exploding riffs. And whether hard or soft, it's all beautiful.
Oh, and something that's come to my attention. My avatar is not Gollum from LOTR, but is in fact Tool artwork. Notice the multiple pupils in one eye? Gollum doesn't have those, cuz he doesn't drop acid. And my signature and avatar subtitle are both lyrics from Lateralus.

Oh, and some song reccomendations for beginners would be:
46 & 2 Sober Flood Push it (9 minutes regular, 14 minutes live version) Parabol/Parabola Lateralus
And a Tool cover of Led Zeppelin's "No Quarter"

Oh, and who here's seen some of their music videos? Pretty crazy stuff, huh? Claymation and whatnot. Out of like 7 videos, the band has only actually appeared in one of them, which was made back in like 1991.
But if you can download their most recent one for Parabola. It's a bit of a hefty file though, seeing as how the song is 10 minutes long.
And on another note, their guitarist, Adam Jones directs the videos. He is a special effects artist and has done sfx for movies like Terminator 2 and Predator 2.

Ummm, they said they started recording this year, but knowing Tool and how they seem to release an album every 3-5 years, it probly won’t be out ‘til 2004 or 2005.
And yes, if your computer has the power, download their videos. They have videos for these songs:
Hush (only one to have the actual band in it. The lead singer is the short guy with the hat.) Stinkfist Prison Sex Aenema Schism Parabol/Parabola
And for your reading pleasure, more fun facts:
The band finds great interest in the belief of Chakra, or the belief of spiritual centers within the body. This is shown in their video for Parabola. They also delve into Buddhism.
All four members of Tool are either over or approaching 40 years of age. Their bassist, Justin Chancellor is the youngest at 36. Justin Chancellor is also British.
The lead singer, Maynard James Keenan, practices the martial art of Jujutsu (what ninjas use)
The drummer, Danny Carey, trained for years with an Indian tantric drum master by the name of Aloke Dutta. At every concert he places a giant gong with a pentagram on it behind him, claiming that he receives spiritual power from it. He arranges his drumset in a form resembling the sybol of Astaroth, which is no small feat, because his set consists of 9 drums, several electronic sound panels, and 15, yes 15 cymbals.

Oh, that was just the tip of the iceberg. I know much, much, much more. Maybe later, when I’m on my good computer. Ya know, good as in doesn’t kick me off or freeze every 10 minutes.
And yes, my friend has the Tool dvd,”Salival” I think was the name, which has the videos for Hush (it’s hidden on the dvd menu) Aenema, Stinkfist, Sober and Prison Sex.
And who here’s heard the two “Third Eye Open” cd’s. They’re orchestral versions of Tool songs performed by a string quartet. Haven’t heard ‘em yet, but I want to.
Which reminds me, another noteworthy song of theirs is “Third Eye”. It’s just a tiny bit abstract, and it’s 14 minutes long. That’s their second longest one. Their longest song is the trio of “Disposition”, “Reflection”, and “Triad” which runs over 23 minutes long on their Lateralus album. It’s one song, but they had to divide it into three because of its overwhelming length. That’s one of the things that makes Lateralus one of the longest cd’s ever released, at 78 minutes and 58 seconds. The max length possible for cd’s is 79 minutes, so Tool decided to give you 2 seconds of breathing space on the cd. And what’s more? They had more material. Filling up a cd wasn’t even enough. Crazy.

Besides having kick ass music,Lateralus had one of the coolest booket things ever.
And that Third Eye Open thing could be cool...

Yeah, Lateralus was truly their pinnacle album.
And that art you speak of was done by a one Alex Grey, and the art itself is based off of Chakra. He has a website as well, Alexgrey.com I think. Cam De Leon did the art mainly for Undertow and Aenema. Alex Grey did most of the art for Lateralus. He also did the CG movie at the end of the Parabola video. And if you need an explanation of just what the hell is going on in some of the videos, ask me. I don’t know a whole lot, but I might have some idea, especially about Parabola. Right now I’ll just say it has to do with the enlightenment of Buddha, because Buddhism and Chakra are closely intertwined. I’ll elaborate upon request.
Another fun fact about Lateralus: Track number 4 is a one minute intro to Schism. All it is is a low, disturbing groaning noise that goes on for a bit. That groaning is actually the lead singer squezzing his Siamese cat. It made a funny sound, and he liked it so he slowed the audio down dramatically and turned it into a little intro. Just shows that however serious they get, they always have a hidden sense of humor.
