first off, kenny, you have the worst categorizations of music ever. seriously, go to a music review website and try looking up gorillaz under R&B. THEY ARENT THERE! and wilshire, rap is not necessarily talking fast to a beat, or talking rythmically for that matter. Maya Angelou says poems, does that make her rap? so did walt whitman, was he a rap artist?

okay...john...i dont have a bad catagorization...it is just strictly different from others...i base it on the term...rythm...and blues...not the common catagory...sure you wont find it there...but i think it has a very large rythm/harmony ratio, and has some large blues influences and patterns...

once again, have you heard of THE ROOTS??? and also , a lot of old school rap has a heavy emphasis on the DJ and the way he plays around with the beat. that shit is tight. when you keep makingyoure generalizations like, "all black people are stupid" youre bound to offend someone wilshire, so you better back off

woah. you went from old school rap and the roots to me saying "all black people are stupid". Where the hell do you get this from? ?? Honestly! Im talking about rap as a type of music. Its talking ryhtmically. Yes there is other stuff in with it, but rap is the type of music often incorporated in with other types of music where there is rhythmic TALKING. I love rap in a lot of kinds of music. I like it best when there is real music and talent involved, and old school rap is fun. A lot of the mainstream rap and R&B is crap in my belief. Did I EVER say that "all black people are dumb"? NO! So please stop saying that I did (among other things), and stop making these things up Gil!

umm...rap is not talking fast to a beat...where did you get that? what are the blues, talking fast with a blues pattern...(a beat)...they are blues, and he isnt rapping hes singing the blues, while often it isnt actually singing...furthermore...poetrey is never turned to rap...it becomes a recital...and rap is often poetrey...so if you took a poem...like "Dawns Highway"...had him speak it fast...in tune...talking...not singing...and put a beat behind it...what do you get? well...take a guess people...

uh...rap

here we go. rap (verb): 1. to talk freely and frankly 2. to perform rap music. rap (noun): 1. talk, conversation; also a line of talk 2. (a) a rhythmic chanting often in unison of usu. rhymed couplets to a musical accompaniment (b) a piece so performed
so rap as a noun (2, a) is rhythmic chanting (not like a gregorian chant) in unison, ususally in rhymed couplets. So if poetry which is in rhymed couplets was put to music and "chanted" in unison, its rap.
what do you define rap as?

Gil u know ur shit. I like the way that you can come up with ways to tell people that they are wrong but do it in a matter where it is nice but puts them down at the same time.

umm...nice comment...about the sarcasm...is this supposed to be some hate thread or something? i thought it was a discussion, not a flame or praise thread...really...
and john, you dont really come up with proofs against my catagorization, just a different opinion, a proof is basically impossible, being that its an opinionated situation...
