What do you all feel about military drafting? Is it the government's right? More importantly, how would you feel if they decided to draft women? Discuss. [heh, that sounded like an essay question]
We talked about this in my history class and things got heated so I decided to bring it here. I believe that women should be included in drafts. Some bitch about not being equal but they're not up to taking the responsibility of going off to war. I guess I'm biased since I intend on joining the Navy, or the army reserve at the least. I grew up in a military family. Father was a drill sgt at one time (he can yell a lot), grandfather was an lt. and my uncle is an arms sgt. at camp Pendleton. But they don't feel that women should go to war because they're too "delicate" and "sensitive." That's just a bunch of b.s. Sure, our body builds are different, that just means we have to work harder at it and use our brains more, but it can be done. "Anything you can do, I can do better..."

i doubt that the government will resort to draft any time soon or even ever (after vietnam they realize some problems that can come from it in these times). Though i do think it is their right to demand the service of their citizens, and i would not oppose or avoid it. women should not be forced to draft, however, because many women would not be able to handle the army. women who wish to join and can meet the physical requirements should be allowed to join and fight. i am strongly against the dumbing down of standards in order to include more women in the military, because it's unfair and creates unsafe conditions.

Yeah, if 'Nam was any example of how bad that could get, we won't see a draft at least until we're too old to apply...
In History, we did a project where we wanted to see what percentage of us would have what happen to us in the draft.
1 ran to canada, 5 came back OK 7 came back with minor injuries 1 came back without legs (that just happened to be me) 1 died in combat
with the ratio of safe returns to not-so-safe returns almost 1:2, there'll be no more draft in which barely functioning soldiers are blasted into oblivion.
I hope.

If the country really needs it, it should draft. People, men, should realize that they have a duty to their country, and so when it calls, they need to answer.
Women, I believe should be allowed in the armed forces as long as they chose to go into them, realizing they will be treated equally (as much as is reasonable, realizing the biological differences between women and men). But for the draft, i think it should only be men. Traditionally, women have never served in the military in any country. Now these days they do, but if the draft comes about, men should be taken.

i dont think they should draft.... i mean dont we have our freedom to join or not? ...but if they DO draft, there should be no differences between men and women....they should both have to serve regardless of gender

I can't say that I like the draft because I got drafted in Vietnam and then came back due to a gunshot wound ... history class. If it comes down to it and there needs to be a draft, I'm not gonna go out on the streets and fight it, I'll go along with it and cooperate. Concerning men and women. Who cares about gender, women want equality, they can get their equality, just don't come crying to me if it turns out to be too hard for you. War isn't a place/time for sensitivity.

Yeah women can bitch about women's rights, but the simple fact remains, men and women are not equal. They are in some ways, but not in all ways. So if they really want equality, might as well let them have it. I'd prefer not to send women off to war.
I think the Marine Corps has it right. They train women and men separately, unlike Army/Navy/Airforce. And no one is a draftee in the Marines. They take only volunteers because they don't want anyone there who doesn't want to be there. They train warriors and as seen in Vietnam, not too many draftees are warriors.

a draft would be bad. but if one happened, people who dodge it should be dragged into the street and shot(haha old USSR thinking). but anyways vietnam was a bad era to have a draft. there was already opposition to the war.so you already knew that people wouldnt like the draft. the draft during world war II had a much better outcome than the vietnam draft. people were happy to fight for the cause. thats the way it should be.but still having a draft should be the last resort.

i mean dont we have our freedom to join or not? we have obligation to contribute to the protection of our country and its ideals if asked to by the military. wilshire, i dont see whats so good about training men and women seperatly. theyre gonna be fighting together so they may as well learn together.

just a fact, you can get out of the draft if you take the proper steps (legaly) and petition it, and you have to write a document and have it approved stating your moral against it...
i am a christian, i will not put my country above God, thats simple, so if i am drafted to kill innocent people, i wont follow through with it, they dont want to send people like me over to fight, rely on me, and have me fail them...so they have an opt out, its very long and you really have to work on it...im not sure of the exact procedure...but i know there is one...

ok yeah you can get out of the draft.but you have to prove that your against war.you have to be against every war that has ever happened. and you can not have any violent tendencies or thoughts. and you have to go through a interview.and one wrong answer can have them rule against you. so yea they pretty much make it impossible for you to get out of the draft.

Maybe your time to die is in war and that's God's plan for you. If it is, so be it, if not, then you may go to war and not die.

the chances of a draft happening within our lifetime IS slim, but who knows
personally, I think wartime conscription is totally justified, but I do not believe that anyone should EVER be drafted into a police action (such as vietnam). I think that involuntary military service should only be used when there is a direct threat to the US, and if such a threat existed I would indeed support a draft. As far as WHO should go? Everyone over 18. Male/female, gay/strait, black/white, college bound/dropout, (minus physically disabled people obviously.) I think that if there should be a draft then everyone should serve, no exception, and sons of senators should be first pick.) If there was a draft in this country, although my mom would probably wish me paddled for saying so, and I got pick I'd go (hypothetically speaking of course, come under the gun I might shit myself instead, but I THINK I'd go.) I'd come back in a bag, most likely, but I am part of that EQUALITY I believe in, and therefore as action of principle I would consider it my duty to report.

The draft can suck my ass. No way I'm gonna get killed, or even moreso kill, just because some damn corrupt politician tells me to. Just who the hell came up with a system that would force people to kill eachother against their will for political reasons? And the last man I'd ever fight for is Bush, that goddamn puppet.

Yes,screw the draft I am not fighting.I would not kill just because the president told me too.
And whoever said something about God's plan I am pretty damn sure it would not involve me killing a bunch of people over seas.So unless God himself tells me it is his plan,I am not killing.
