Yes it's all in the eye of the beholder.
I would say underground is whats in MRR.And lesser heard bands on MTV2.

generally I listen to more underground stuff, but I will listen to anything as long as my ears like it.

OK...undergound is good...but if its good to lots of people (mostly poorly develped music taste)...then it becomes mainstream...but you couldnt hate on like zepplin, or smashing pumpkins, or bach just cuz it was popular!
By the way check out: MODEST MOUSE UGLY CASSANOVA STEVE BURNS THE SHINS (all undergoundish stuff...very good)

good call... i was formulating that style...these bands show the edges and define it...quality stuff...some early jefferson airplane can show it too...not jefferson starship...thats too post '69...

hah...so do the white stripes every now and then...they play a lot...but yellow card hit semi big and my friend just hated them...bam...same with blink...he hates them now...

I kinda like the lo-fi sound.When a cd is too polished I don't think it sounds all too good.You need a happy medium.
